Tournament Evolution – Memphis Classic
- 2002: A women’s WTA tournament moves from Oklahoma City to Memphis and becomes part of the city’s established professional tennis event.
- 2002–2008: The Memphis women’s tournament is staged as a WTA Tier III event on indoor hard courts.
- 2009: The tournament becomes a WTA International event following changes to the tour’s classification system.
- 2013: Marina Erakovic wins the final women’s Memphis title before the tournament disappears from the WTA calendar.
- 2026: Women’s tour-level tennis returns to Memphis after a 13-year absence with the inaugural Memphis Classic, a WTA 250 tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the renovated Leftwich Tennis Center. The event replaces Cleveland’s Tennis in the Land on the calendar.

Women’s tour-level tennis was last played in Memphis in 2013. Marina Erakovic won that edition after Sabine Lisicki retired from the final with Erakovic leading 6-1.
The Memphis Classic is officially a new tournament, meaning there is no Memphis Classic 2025 edition. The 2026 event marks the return of the WTA Tour to the city after a 13-year absence.
About the Memphis Classic 2026
The Memphis Classic is a new outdoor hard-court tournament on the WTA calendar and forms part of the North American summer hard-court swing. Staged at the Leftwich Tennis Center, the WTA 250 event gives players another opportunity to compete in the United States ahead of the larger tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati and the US Open.
The Leftwich Tennis Center completed an extensive renovation and expansion in 2023. The 2026 tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles competition and replaces the former WTA tournament in Cleveland.
