Qualifying – Semi-finals
In this second round of qualifying, every player who secured a win has already guaranteed themselves a significant reward, earning A$57,000 (approximately US $38,300 / €32,700; exchange rates as of Jan. 14, source: exchange-rates.org) in prize money along with 16 WTA ranking points.
Australian Open qualifying semi-finals were defined by survival as much as shot-making, with four retirements exposing how thin the physical margins already are in Melbourne.
Experience largely paid its dues: Viktoriya Tomova and Anhelina Kalinina both came through in straight sets, while Sloane Stephens steadied herself after a slow start to roll past Olivia Gadecki in three. Storm Hunter and Taylor Townsend also leaned on match sense, navigating tight moments without blinking.
There was chaos elsewhere, with ten matches stretching to three sets and momentum swinging freely, from Lucia Bronzetti’s gritty escape against Mary Stoiana to Spain’s ITF-specialist Guiomar Maristany edging a final-set tiebreak. The message from this round was blunt — ranking counts for little in qualifying, and those who manage nerves, heat, and recovery best are the ones still standing on the brink of the main draw.
Several nations saw their qualifying campaigns end abruptly in the second round, with France the most striking example. Despite entering 12 athletes, the French contingent failed to produce a single QR2 winner, underlining a disappointing outcome after a modest three wins in the opening round. Argentina followed a similar pattern: all three of its QR1 winners were eliminated in QR2, bringing an early end to its challenge. The Netherlands and Croatia also exited quietly, with neither country managing to push a player through the second qualifying hurdle.
In contrast, Ukraine stood out as the clear success story of the draw. All three Ukrainian players not only reached the second round but also won there, giving the nation a perfect conversion rate across both stages. Ukraine was the only country with more than one athlete to see its entire contingent survive through QR2, highlighting exceptional depth and consistency compared to the rest of the field.

Qualifying – First Round

Australian Open 2026 qualifying got further moving with a first round full of clear patterns. For the home players it was a mixed day: Storm Hunter advanced, but Destanee Aiava fell to Harriet Dart, Astra Sharma was edged by Carson Branstine, and Taylah Kokkinis went out to Anouk Koevermans.
The headline theme was resilience. Mai Hontama produced one of the best turnarounds, recovering from a 1–6 first set to beat Maria Timofeeva 1–6, 6–4, 7–5, while Lilli Tagger also flipped her match against Gao after dropping the opener. At the same time, there were plenty of no-nonsense statements: Silvia Ambrosio, Yue Yuan, Ma and Lucrezia Stefanini all moved through in straight sets.
Whitney Osuigwe’s 6–2, 6–0 win over Anastasija Sevastova was one of the day’s most emphatic scorelines.
Off-court developments mattered too, with a retirement (Wei vs Kalieva) and two cancellations reshaping the bracket, before Chloe Paquet later squeezed past Kristina Mladenovic in three sets.
