Janice Tjen Returns as Defending Champion

Janice Tjen returns to Chennai in a very different position from twelve months ago.

The Indonesian entered the 2025 tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3 in the final to win her first WTA singles title. Tjen also won the doubles championship alongside fellow Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi, completing a singles-and-doubles sweep.

In 2026, she returns as the No. 1 seed and opens against American wildcard Katherine Hui.

Previous Chennai Open Women’s Singles Results

2025

Janice Tjen (Ina) defeated Kimberly Birrell (Aus) 6-4, 6-3

Tjen became the first Indonesian woman in 23 years to win a WTA singles title and completed the week by also lifting the doubles trophy.

2022

Linda Fruhvirtova (Cze) defeated Magda Linette (Pol) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

The then-17-year-old Czech recovered from 4-1 down in the deciding set to win her first WTA title.

The Chennai Open was not held in 2023 or 2024 before returning in 2025.

The Final Chennai Open as a WTA 250

The 2026 edition carries additional significance because it is expected to be the last Chennai Open under its current WTA 250 license.

Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president Vijay Amritraj confirmed on October 31 that the tournament slot will move to Manila in the Philippines from 2027.

That makes the November 8 champion potentially the final winner of this chapter of the Chennai Open.
