No News Here: Leylah Fernandez Defeats Ekaterina Alexandrova Again

Leylah Fernandez celebrates after defeating Elise Mertens in the first round of the Ningbo Open

Leylah Fernandez vs. Ekaterina Alexandrova — Ningbo Open 2026 Quarterfinal Match Report.

Eleven days, two Chinese cities and the same result for Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Russian has run into Leylah Fernandez again, and once more the Canadian has sent her packing.

After defeating Alexandrova in three sets at Wuhan, Fernandez repeated the trick in Ningbo, recovering from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in Friday’s quarterfinals.

The similarities were striking. Alexandrova had her chances in both matches, but Fernandez proved increasingly difficult to break down.

This time, the Canadian was particularly ruthless after losing the opening set. She conceded just three more games and secured a semifinal against Marie Bouzkova.

Alexandrova Makes the First Move

Fernandez opened the match with a comfortable hold, but Alexandrova soon found her way into the Canadian’s service games.

The Russian broke in the third game to take a 2-1 lead and consolidated for 3-1.

Fernandez tried to respond, surviving a lengthy seventh game that featured several deuces and break points. She eventually held to stay within touching distance at 3-4.

But Alexandrova was giving little away on her own serve.

The Russian held for 5-3 and, after Fernandez reduced the deficit to 5-4, served out the opening set 6-4.

One break had been enough.

For a player who had lost their previous meeting in Wuhan, it was exactly the start Alexandrova needed.

Unfortunately for her, Fernandez had plenty more to offer.

Leylah Fernandez Takes Over After a Tight Start to the Second Set

The Canadian began the second set with a hold, but Alexandrova made her work for the next breakthrough.

The Russian survived a marathon second game to level at 1-1, saving several break opportunities along the way.

Both players continued holding serve until Fernandez moved ahead 3-2.

Then the match changed.

Fernandez finally broke through in the sixth game to lead 4-2, ending Alexandrova’s resistance on serve.

She consolidated the break for 5-2 and immediately went after the Russian’s serve again.

Another break followed, handing Fernandez the set 6-2.

From 2-2, the Canadian had won four consecutive games. Alexandrova, who had looked comfortable throughout the opening set, was suddenly struggling to keep pace.

Alexandrova Has No Answer in the Decider

The deciding set was even more one-sided.

Fernandez held her opening service game and broke immediately to establish a 2-0 lead.

A further hold made it 3-0.

Alexandrova briefly stopped the slide, holding serve to get on the scoreboard at 3-1.

But there would be no comeback.

Fernandez moved ahead 4-1 before breaking again to leave herself serving for the match at 5-1.

The Prague resident still managed one final act of resistance.

She saved three match points and forced Fernandez through several deuces in the final game. But the Canadian converted her fourth opportunity to complete a 6-1 deciding set.

After losing the opener, Fernandez had won 12 of the next 15 games.

Another three-set meeting with Alexandrova. Another victory for the Canadian.

Fernandez Wins the Error Battle and Dominates on Second Serve

The statistics explain why Alexandrova’s promising start ultimately counted for so little.

The Russian actually struck one more winner than Fernandez, finishing with 21 against the Canadian’s 20.

But the unforced-error count was another matter entirely.

Alexandrova committed a remarkable 59 unforced errors, compared with 39 for Fernandez.

Neither player produced particularly clean tennis, but those additional 20 mistakes proved expensive.

Fernandez also enjoyed a substantial advantage behind her second serve.

The Canadian won 72% of her second-serve points (23/32), while Alexandrova managed just 47% (18/38).

Their first-serve figures were much closer. Fernandez won 64% of those points, compared with 60% for the Russian.

Alexandrova struck five aces against Fernandez’s three, but the Canadian was far more reliable across her service games.

She held serve in 12 of her 13 games, losing her delivery only once throughout the match.

Alexandrova, meanwhile, dropped serve four times.

Fernandez converted four of her nine break points, while the Russian managed just one break from four opportunities.

The dominance ratio was firmly in the Canadian’s favour at 1.40 against 0.71.

She also won 94 of the 165 points played, accounting for 57% of the total. The pressure points were more evenly divided, with Fernandez winning 14 of 27.

Alexandrova had moments of success, but the overall numbers left little doubt.

Fernandez was the steadier player, especially when the rallies became prolonged.

Wuhan Was the Warning. Ningbo Was the Confirmation.

The two players had already produced an entertaining three-set contest at the Wuhan Open on October 12.

Fernandez won that encounter 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, surviving a difficult afternoon in which she saved 14 of 19 break points.

Alexandrova had struck 26 winners but also committed 47 unforced errors.

Those mistakes were costly enough in Wuhan. In Ningbo, the number climbed to 59.

There was another important difference.

In Wuhan, Fernandez needed to withstand repeated pressure on her serve. In Ningbo, she allowed Alexandrova only four break-point opportunities across the entire match.

The Russian had fought back to take the second set in their previous encounter. This time, Fernandez was the one who recovered after losing the opener.

Different circumstances. Same winner.

And Fernandez’s reward is another intriguing semifinal.

She will face Marie Bouzkova, who defeated Sara Bejlek 6-3, 6-4 earlier on Friday.

The Czech has developed an interesting habit this season. She has reached two semifinals, in Bogotá and Nottingham, and gone on to win both tournaments.

Fernandez, meanwhile, has now beaten Alexandrova twice in less than two weeks.

Two players with rather impressive records to protect. And in Ningbo, only one of them can keep hers intact.
