Claire Liu Ends Zeynep Sonmez’s Latest Semifinal Bid in Hong Kong

Claire Liu competes during the 2026 Hong Kong Open

Zeynep Sonmez vs. Claire Liu — Hong Kong Open 2026 Quarterfinal Match Report.

Mérida, ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Eastbourne. Three tournaments this season where Zeynep Sonmez had come within one victory of a WTA semifinal, only to fall short.

Hong Kong offered the Turkish No. 1 the best opportunity. This time, the world No. 67 faced an opponent ranked outside the top 100, and the prospect of reaching the final four looked particularly inviting.

But Claire Liu had other plans.

The 26-year-old American, ranked No. 102, produced one of her most convincing performances of the season, defeating Sonmez 6-1, 6-4 on Friday, November 6, to reach the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open semifinals.

Liu never lost her serve, struck six aces and won an impressive 85% of points behind her first delivery.

For Sonmez, it was another quarterfinal disappointment.

For the Californian, whose season has largely unfolded away from the biggest WTA events, the victory represented something considerably more rewarding.

Liu Takes Control After a Competitive Opening

The opening two games gave little indication of the one-sided set that would follow.

Liu held serve to begin the match, while Sonmez survived a lengthy service game to level at 1-1.

That would be the Turkish player’s only game of the set.

Liu held for 2-1 before securing the first break to move ahead 3-1. She consolidated and then broke Sonmez again for 5-1.

The American completed the set with another comfortable hold, winning five consecutive games to take the opener 6-1.

Sonmez struggled to make an impression on Liu’s service games, particularly when the Californian landed her first delivery.

Her own serve was proving considerably more vulnerable, allowing Liu to attack and dictate the direction of the opening set.

For a player hoping to reach her first WTA semifinal of the season, it was a difficult start.

One Early Break Is Enough for Liu in the Second Set

Sonmez began the second set more positively, holding serve for 1-0.

But the improvement was short-lived.

Liu leveled at 1-1 and immediately broke the Turkish player to establish a 2-1 advantage.

Another hold extended her lead to 3-1.

Sonmez responded by holding for 2-3, but Liu continued to protect her serve, moving ahead 4-2.

The Turkish player was not prepared to surrender without a fight.

She survived an extended service game to reduce the deficit to 3-4, keeping herself within striking distance.

But the break she desperately needed never arrived.

Liu held for 5-3, and although Sonmez responded to make it 5-4, the American remained composed when serving for the match.

Liu created two match points before converting her second opportunity.

The victory was secured 6-1, 6-4, with Liu winning every one of her nine service games.

Sonmez had managed to make the second set competitive, but she never recovered the break surrendered in the third game.

For the fourth time in the tournaments highlighted this season, the semifinal remained one victory beyond Turkey’s best reach.

She won 34 of 40 first-serve points, an 85% success rate, while Sonmez managed only 56%.

The Californian also saved both break points she faced, completing the entire match without surrendering a service game.

Sonmez, by contrast, was broken three times from nine opportunities.

Liu’s superior attacking efficiency was equally evident. She struck 25 winners against 14 unforced errors, compared with Sonmez’s 16 winners and 19 unforced errors.

The American finished with 66 of the 113 points played and a dominance ratio of 1.70, comfortably ahead of Sonmez’s 0.59.

It was a performance in which Liu controlled almost every important statistical category. The only significant exception came on second-serve points, where Sonmez enjoyed a modest advantage.

But with Liu winning so many points behind her first delivery, that difference proved largely irrelevant.

Another Quarterfinal Leaves Sonmez Waiting

There is a frustrating pattern to Zeynep Sonmez’s 2026 season.

The 24-year-old Turkish No. 1 has repeatedly worked her way into the later stages of WTA tournaments without managing to take the final step into a semifinal.

At the Mérida Open, Cristina Bucsa ended her run.

In ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Magda Linette stood in her way.

At Eastbourne, Jelena Ostapenko provided another difficult examination, and Sonmez again fell short.

Hong Kong appeared to offer a different opportunity.

With Liu ranked No. 102, Sonmez faced an opponent outside the world’s top 100 rather than another established top-ranked contender.

Yet rankings alone were never going to determine the outcome.

Liu served exceptionally well, made fewer mistakes and gave Sonmez almost no opportunities to attack her delivery.

The defeat does not erase the progress the Turkish player has made in reaching these quarterfinals. But the repeated inability to advance further is becoming a significant feature of her season.

Sonmez has shown she can reach the last eight. The next challenge is proving she can win there.

Claire Liu Finds a Bigger Reward After a Season on Smaller Courts

For Claire Liu, the road to this Hong Kong semifinal has looked rather different.

The 26-year-old from Thousand Oaks, California, has spent much of 2026 competing at smaller professional tournaments rather than relying exclusively on appearances at the biggest WTA events.

It has been a productive approach.

Earlier this season, Liu collected titles in Barranquilla, Colombia, and Trnava, Slovakia, adding valuable victories and ranking points while rebuilding her competitive position.

Those tournaments rarely receive the attention given to major WTA events, but success there can help restore the confidence and consistency needed to compete higher up the professional circuit.

Her Hong Kong performance suggests that work has been worthwhile.

Against Sonmez, Liu faced an opponent ranked 35 places above her and carrying the expectations associated with being Turkey’s leading singles player.

Yet she was comfortably the better performer.

Winning every service game against a top-70 opponent is an achievement in itself. Doing so in a WTA quarterfinal makes the victory particularly significant.

For Liu, the victory sets up a semifinal against surprise package Aleksandra Shubladze, offering her a chance to reach the final after steadily building momentum on the lower-level circuit.
