Sonay Kartal Waits Until the Last Game to Snipe Svitolina and Reach the Wuhan Semifinals

Sonay Kartal celebrates after reaching the semifinals of the 2026 Wuhan Open

Sonay Kartal vs. Elina Svitolina — Wuhan Open 2026 Quarterfinal Match Report

Sonay Kartal had spent most of the deciding set waiting.

No break points. No opening. Nothing to separate her from Elina Svitolina through nine straight service holds.

Then, with Svitolina serving at 4-5, the first break point Kartal saw in the entire third set was also her first match point.

She took it immediately.

That one strike completed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory and sent the world No. 170 into the Wuhan semifinals, where Jelena Ostapenko awaits.

Just hours after Maja Chwalinska had also waited until the end of a tight deciding set to make her move against Maria Sakkari, Kartal produced her own version.

One opening.

One shot at it.

Gone.

Kartal Takes the First Set Before Svitolina Reverses Everything

Kartal started with complete authority.

She held the opening game, broke Svitolina for 2-0, then consolidated for 3-0.

Svitolina finally got on the board at 3-1, but Kartal kept the break intact through 4-1 and 5-2.

Then came another strike.

With Svitolina serving at 2-5, Kartal broke again to take the set 6-2.

The second set flipped almost perfectly.

This time Svitolina broke immediately for 1-0, held for 2-0 and gradually took over the same territory Kartal had controlled in the opener.

A second break pushed the Ukrainian ahead 4-1.

Kartal held once more at 5-2, but Svitolina served out the set 6-2.

Two sets.

Two completely different versions of the match.

Nine Holds and No Room to Move

The third set stripped away the momentum swings.

Kartal held for 1-0.

Svitolina answered.

Kartal went to 2-1.

Svitolina answered again.

The pattern continued through 3-3, 4-4 and then 5-4 to Kartal.

Neither player had managed to create a break point.

Svitolina now had to hold once more to stay in the tournament.

For the first time in the set, Kartal reached 30-40.

Break point.

Match point.

There would be no second one.

Kartal converted immediately for 6-4.

Almost Nothing Separates Them Until the Final Break

The statistics underline just how narrow the match became.

Kartal finished with a 1.01 dominance ratio to Svitolina’s 0.99 and won only four more points overall, 78-74.

Svitolina actually struck more winners, 22 to 12, but also committed 33 unforced errors against Kartal’s 25.

Both players won exactly half of the 18 pressure points.

Even the break-point numbers were close: Kartal converted three of seven, Svitolina two of five.

For two hours, the margins remained tiny.

Then Kartal needed one deciding-set break point.

Wuhan’s Surprise Package Is No Longer Debatable

Kartal’s route makes the semifinal appearance even harder to dismiss as a one-off.

She opened by beating Anhelina Kalinina 7-5, 6-3.

Then came world No. 12 Belinda Bencic, dispatched 6-0, 7-5.

World No. 33 Jasmine Paolini followed, and Kartal demolished her 6-2, 6-0.

Now world No. 6 Svitolina has joined the list.

Four rounds.

Four increasingly significant wins.

At this point, Kartal is officially the surprise package of the Wuhan Open.

A great win for Brit Sonay Kartal into the semi finals of the Wuhan Open tennis tournament!

“I am breaking new ground,” she said. “So, yeah, super proud of the determination I managed to show in that match. And yeah, I just think it was solid composure for me throughout,” she said.

Ostapenko Is Waiting

The reward is Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals.

That creates one of the tournament’s more intriguing collisions.

Ostapenko has been tearing through a difficult section of the draw with the kind of momentum that makes her dangerous to anyone.

Kartal has simply kept removing whoever appears next.

Bencic did not stop her.

Paolini did not stop her.

Svitolina came within one service hold of forcing a deciding-set extension and did not stop her either.

Kartal has reached the Wuhan stage where the question is how much further she can take it.
