The Miami Open has always been a crossroads of tennis generations. Icons return to the stage where they built their legacies, while emerging talents seize the spotlight for the first time.
The 2026 edition at Hard Rock Stadium (March 15–29) reflects that exact blend. Tournament organizers have confirmed the WTA wildcard entries, led by three-time champion Venus Williams, with former champion Sloane Stephens, comeback hopeful Jennifer Brady, and a wave of rising young players also joining the main draw.
But while the list features established names, it also highlights one intriguing storyline: young Austrian talent Lilli Tagger, who already made the most of a wildcard opportunity earlier this month at Indian Wells.
Venus Williams Returns to Her Miami Stage
Few players share a deeper connection with the Miami Open than Venus Williams.
The American legend debuted at the tournament in 1997, and just one year later she captured her first Miami title. Across her career, Williams went on to win the event three times, helping cement its place as one of the most important stops in her remarkable journey.
Now 45 years old, Williams continues to extend her legacy. Her participation in Miami will mark:
- Her 23rd appearance at the Miami Open
- Her 111th WTA 1000 tournament
That number ranks fifth-most in history, underscoring her extraordinary longevity on the sport’s biggest stages.
However, her most recent outing at Indian Wells ended early, as Williams exited in the opening round in the Californian desert.
Former Champion Sloane Stephens Also Returns
Joining Williams on the wildcard list is another former Miami champion.
Sloane Stephens, who won the tournament in 2018, will also compete in the main draw. The American owns eight WTA titles, including the 2017 US Open, and reached both the Roland Garros final and the WTA Finals final in 2018.
Like Williams, Stephens also experienced a difficult week at Indian Wells, where her campaign ended in the first round.
Still, Miami remains a venue where Stephens has previously produced some of the best tennis of her career.
Lilli Tagger Builds Momentum
While two former champions struggled in California, Austria’s Lilli Tagger made the most of her own wildcard opportunity.
The rising Austrian prospect won her opening match at Indian Wells, defeating Varvara Gracheva to claim one of the biggest victories of her young career.
In the second round, she remained competitive in the first set against Maria Sakkari before falling away 7–5, 6–0.
That breakthrough performance gives her additional momentum heading into Miami, where she will once again compete on one of the sport’s largest stages.
For a young player trying to establish herself on the WTA Tour, victories like that can be transformative.
Opportunities for Comebacks and Rising Players
Another notable wildcard recipient is Jennifer Brady, who continues working her way back toward the top of the tour.
Brady reached the Australian Open final in 2021, but injuries have interrupted her career in recent seasons. Miami offers another chance to rebuild momentum following her recent appearance at Indian Wells.
Several American players also received wildcards:
- Taylor Townsend, who recently reached the final in Austin and has advanced to the third round in Miami in each of the past two seasons
- Ashlyn Krueger, one of the rising young Americans continuing her development on the tour
International Young Talent Also Featured
The wildcard list also reflects the tournament’s tradition of promoting international prospects.
Among the younger players receiving opportunities are:
- Lilli Tagger
- Emerson Jones
- Darja Vidmanova
Jones arrives with strong junior credentials, having reached two junior Grand Slam finals in 2024, while Vidmanova continues her transition from the college and ITF levels to the main WTA stage.
For all three players, the Miami Open represents a chance to gain valuable experience in a WTA 1000 environment.
