History of the WTA Abu Dhabi Open
An overview of how the Abu Dhabi Open entered the WTA calendar and why the tournament was created.
The Abu Dhabi Open is a relatively new professional women’s tennis tournament played at WTA 500 level and held in the United Arab Emirates.
The event is contested on outdoor hard courts and was introduced in 2021, with matches scheduled in January at the Zayed Sports City International Tennis Centre in Abu Dhabi.
The tournament was created following the suspension of all WTA events in China and the rescheduling of tournaments in Australia due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, it returned to the WTA Tour as a replacement for the St. Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy, after WTA tournaments in Russia were suspended because of the invasion of Ukraine. Another reason for staging the event in Abu Dhabi was to strengthen the Gulf tennis swing, alongside the established Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Total Open.
