Lucky Loser Nikola Bartunkova Stuns Madison Keys to Continue Dream Rome Run

Nikola Bartunkova celebrating with a powerful fist pump on the clay court during her match in Rome 2026

Nikola Bartunkova was not even supposed to still be in the tournament.

The 20-year-old Czech had already lost in qualifying before Victoria Mboko’s withdrawal handed her an unexpected second chance as a lucky loser. Less than a week later, she walked off court in Rome having defeated reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys to reach the biggest Round of 16 of her young career.

Some opportunities arrive quietly.

Bartůňková has grabbed this one with both hands.

The Czech stunned Keys 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon, continuing one of the most improbable stories of the Italian Open while becoming the first women’s lucky loser to reach the Rome Round of 16 since Lourdes Domínguez Lino in 2013.

Bartunkova fearless from the beginning

The opening set immediately revealed that Bartunkova had no intention of treating the occasion cautiously.

While Keys searched for rhythm early on, the Czech repeatedly attacked second serves and dictated shorter exchanges with surprising calm. An early break pushed her into a 3-0 lead and suddenly the American found herself chasing a match she was expected to control.

Bartunkova served superbly throughout the opener, repeatedly landing high-quality first serves under pressure and refusing to allow Keys clean looks on return.

The set finished 6-3 in favor of the Czech, leaving the former Grand Slam champion visibly unsettled.

Keys storms back before the tension rises again

The second set looked far more familiar.

Keys raised her level dramatically, dropping just three points across her opening service games while repeatedly flattening the ball through the middle of the court. Bartunkova, after playing freely early on, suddenly struggled to contain the American’s acceleration from the baseline.

Keys surged through the set 6-1 and appeared to have fully restored order.

But the deciding set became far tighter than expected.

Neither player managed a break through the opening eight games as both protected serve impressively under growing pressure. Bartůňková, however, remained remarkably composed for a player competing in her first-ever WTA 1000 main draw.

And when the opening finally appeared, she took it.

The Czech secured the decisive late break before serving out one of the biggest wins of her career, completing a result few would have predicted when she lost in qualifying earlier in the week.

Bartunkova sharper in the biggest moments

The raw numbers underlined how narrow the match actually was.

Keys finished with more winners, more aces and even won more total points overall — 75 to 71. Her dominance ratio also remained higher at 1.16 compared to Bartunkova’s 0.86.

But the match ultimately turned on composure.

Bartunkova converted two of her three break points, while Keys managed only two breaks from six opportunities. The Czech also won 67 percent of pressure points, twice the American’s rate, repeatedly producing her calmest tennis at the most important stages.

Keys served well for large stretches, winning 79 percent of first-serve points and striking five aces, but Bartunkova consistently avoided the emotional swings that destabilised the American in key moments.

For Keys, Rome ends far earlier than expected.

For Bartunkova , the dream continues.

And suddenly, the lucky loser no longer looks lucky at all.
