Muguruza Welcomes First Child as a New Chapter Begins Off Court

Garbine Muguruza has entered a different kind of first week. The former world No.1 and two-time Grand Slam champion announced that she gave birth to her first child last week, welcoming a son, Marcos Borges Muguruza, with her husband Arthur — the man she famously met by chance in New York’s Central Park.

Retired from professional tennis but clearly content, Muguruza shared the news with a simple post showing her son’s tiny hand and feet. “Our little miracle,” the caption read. “Marcos Borges Muguruza celebrates one week since his arrival.”

From Centre Court to New Roles

Since stepping away from the tour, Muguruza has not drifted far from the sport. The Spaniard has embraced life beyond competition, taking on new responsibilities within tennis governance. She is set to join the tournament director team at the Madrid Open next year and already served in a similar role at the WTA Finals over the New Year period.

There is no sense of unfinished business. What began as a temporary break from tennis became a permanent goodbye, and Muguruza has been open about feeling no pull to return. The timing, by her own admission, felt right — and motherhood now underlines that sense of closure.

A Central Park Encounter That Changed Everything

Muguruza’s personal story has always carried a cinematic quality. She met her future husband by chance during the 2021 US Open, bumping into him while walking through Central Park near her hotel. “I was bored and thought I’d go for a walk,” she once recalled. “He turned around and said, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I remember thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’”

They became engaged in 2023 and married in October 2024, after a proposal in Marbella that left Muguruza in tears. “I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said. “I cried and said yes — it was very romantic.”

Speaking later to HOLA!, Muguruza described it as love at first sight. “It’s like a movie,” she said. “I knew I would marry him even before he asked.”

Warm Wishes From the Tennis World

The announcement drew warm responses across the tennis community. Caroline Garcia, Flavia Pennetta and Carla Suárez Navarro were among those sending congratulations, while Aryna Sabalenka was also quick to show her support.

For Muguruza, this feels less like a postscript and more like a natural continuation. A new role, a new family, and a sense of calm that eluded her during the grind of the tour. The Muguruza–Borges story has turned another page — and this one is written well away from the baseline.
