Mirra Andreeva (Rus) vs. Mboko V. (Can) preview

In what became a brisk victory for Mirra Andreeva, the opening of the first set proved wildly misleading. Andreeva started with purpose but found herself shoved onto the back foot as Mboko produced a blistering first three games to race into a 3–0 lead.

Then the wheels came off for the talented Canadian. A flurry of unforced errors handed Andreeva a lifeline, and the Russian grabbed it with both hands. She reeled off nine games in a row, turning early promise into a rout; as quickly as it had begun, the match was sitting at 6–3, 3–0 to Andreeva.

A timely medical timeout helped Mboko steady herself long enough to hold serve, but it was only a brief reprieve — and, as it turned out, her last game on the scoreboard. Andreeva closed it out in short order to claim the first WTA 500 title of her career — and, on this evidence, very likely not the last.

Round of 16

January 13 & 14

Mirra Andreeva continued her smooth progress with a confident straight-sets win over qualifier Marie Bouzkova, while the all-Australian clash between Maya Joint and Ajla Tomljanovic ended prematurely due to Tomljanovic’s retirement.

There was late drama as Diana Shnaider edged out Katerina Siniakova in three tight sets, and Emma Navarro maintained her strong start to the season by dismissing lucky loser Yulia Putintseva in straight sets.

Qualifier Jaqueline Cristian produced one of the day’s standout results, eliminating Daria Kasatkina decisively.

In one of the most competitive matches, Victoria Mboko survived a tense third-set tiebreak against Anna Kalinskaya, and Madison Keys closed out proceedings with a solid win over qualifier Tereza Valentova.
